Chapter Five

LIFE AT SEA

When Jake woke it was still dark outside.

He felt sick to his stomach.

The floor of his bedroom was rolling from side to side.

Jake stood up. He heard strange creaking sounds he did not recognize. It sounded as if waves were hitting the side of his house.

Again, the floor tilted under his feet. Was he dreaming?

A spray of cold salt water hit him in the face. What was going on? Was his bedroom window open? He groped for the light switch on the wall, but he couldn’t find it. Kidd stood in the doorway, holding a candle and some rope.

“Bad weather ahead,” said the captain. “Best to tie the furniture down!”

Jake realized this wasn’t a dream.

He had traveled back in time with Captain Kidd. He was aboard a pirate ship! His bedroom had become a ship’s cabin. All his toys were gone. There was only a hammock, a chair and a large wooden chest.

Just then, the chest started to slide across the floor. It crashed into the wall. Jake stared. It was the exact spot where he had been sleeping. He took the rope and lashed the chest to the wall.

Jake went out on deck. Pirates were running back and forth, taking down the sails. Captain Kidd barked out orders.

Jake grabbed the captain’s sleeve.

“What’s going on?” he shouted over the sound of the wind and the waves. “Where are we?”
